Di Toro and Shuker beat second seeds in Wimbledon Women’s Wheelchair Doubles semi-finals

PRESS INFORMATION

Di Toro and Shuker beat second seeds in Wimbledon Women’s Wheelchair Doubles semi-finals

Dutch top seeds Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer will play British No 1 Lucy Shuker and Australia’s Daniela di Toro in Sunday’s Women’s Wheelchair Doubles final at The Championships after di Toro and Shuker beat the second seeded pairing of Frenchwoman Florence Gravellier and Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands in Friday’s semi-finals.

The first semi-final of the inaugural Women’s Wheelchair Doubles on court 14 produced a comfortable 6-0, 6-0 win for Homan and Vergeer, the world’s top ranked women’s singles and doubles players and the women’s wheelchair doubles champions at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros this season.

Meanwhile, Shuker and di Toro reached their first Grand Slam doubles final after securing a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gravellier and Griffioen.

Homan served two aces in the opening game of the first semi-final as she and Vergeer laid down a stern challenge to Germany’s Katharina Kruger and Sharon Walraven of the Netherlands.  Kruger and Walraven managed to take the next two games to deuce, but there was no way back as Homan and Vergeer’s penetrating ground strokes produced a succession of winners and an increasing number of errors from their opponents.

Homan sent a forehand down the middle of the court to leave Kruger and Walraven stranded at 3-0 down in the second set and despite Walraven’s ability to return some tough attacking shots to her backhand, she lost her racket as she attempted to save another game point in the eleventh game.

Five points later, after exactly 40 minutes of play, Kruger sent a forehand long over her opponents’ baseline to give Homan and Vergeer the victory on the first of two match points.

“It’s my first time here at Wimbledon and I’m very glad we are in the final and I get the shot at adding a Wimbledon title to my CV,” said Vergeer, who is unbeaten in singles and doubles wheelchair events at the Grand Slams and is bidding to make the inaugural Wimbledon Women’s Doubles the 125th doubles title of her career.

“This week is the first time I have played on grass and I have heard all sorts of things about how much harder it is to play on the grass.  It is unlike any other surface we play on, but it was a lot better than I was anticipating and I’m looking forward to Sunday now.”

In the second semi-final di Toro and Shuker gained an immediate break of serve to go 2-0 ahead and were only taken to deuce once in the first nine games, that coming on Shuker’s opening service game.

A combination of di Toro’s exquisite slices and Shuker’s deft touches at the net helped maintain their early advantage and although they were taken to deuce on di Toro’s serve in the tenth game, the Anglo-Australian partnership held on to seize the advantage.

Di Toro and Shuker saved two game points in the third game of the second set and opened up a 3-0 lead after a series of four deuces.  Gravellier and Griffioen took the next two games to keep their hopes alive of reaching a first Grand Slam final after being losing semi-finalists at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, but their hopes looked like fading after di Toro and Shuker won the next two games for the loss of just two points.

Di Toro and Shuker were only able to get one point on the board as di Toro served for the match at 5-2 in the second set, but in the next game Gravellier served a double fault to bring up two match points.  Shuker failed to get enough of her racket on the ball as she attempted a drop shot at the net on the first match point and   Gravellier made up for the earlier double fault as she lobbed di Toro to save the second match point, Gravellier and Griffioen going on to edge the game.

However, Shuker served for the match again at 5-4 and she and di Toro finally clinched their third match point to close out a superb win.

“Ever since I started playing wheelchair tennis in 2003 it’s been a dream to play at Wimbledon, so now that I’m here we were determined to make the most of it,” said British No 1 Shuker, who divides her time between her family home in Hampshire and her training base in Somerset.  “Danni retired shortly after the 2004 Paralympics, just as wheelchair tennis was becoming more established in the Grand Slams, but made a comeback a couple of years ago, so for us to reach our first Grand Slam final together is fantastic.  We’ll go away now and talk to our coaches and try to come up with a plan to try and beat Korie and Esther in Sunday’s final.  It’s obviously going to be tough, but we will do our best and will enjoy it.”

Sebastien Grosjean Receives Wild Card Into Hall of FameTennis Championships

For Immediate Release – July 3, 2009

FRANCE’s SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN Receives Final Wild Card
Into Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships

Americans Gimelstob and Levine Get Doubles Wild Card

NEWPORT, RI – The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced that Sebastien Grosjean of France has been awarded the third and final wild card into the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships played for the Van Alen Cup. In addition, a doubles wild card has been awarded to the American team of Justin Gimelstob and Jesse Levine.

The Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships is scheduled for July 6-12 and is the only ATP World Tour event played on grass in North America. The Newport tournament features 32 of the top men in professional tennis competing for $500,000 in prize money.

A 13-year veteran of the ATP World Tour, Grosjean reached a career-high rank of No. 4 in the world in 2002.  His grass court record includes his first career title at Nottingham in 2000 as well as semifinal runs at Wimbledon in 2003 and 2004 along with a quarterfinal in 2005. Grosjean underwent shoulder surgery in December of 2008, and will make his second ATP World Tour appearance of 2009 when he makes his debut on the historic grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Gimelstob, who retired at the end of the 2007 season, comes back to the site of his first career doubles title (1997) and only singles final (2006). In his career, the New Jersey native won 13 doubles titles. Since retiring, he has been elected as a player representative to the ATP Board of Directors and also serves as a commentator for Tennis Channel. Levine heads to Newport fresh off his career-best Grand Slam. The 21-year-old from Florida upset 2008 Wimbledon semifinalist Marat Safin in the first round at the All England Club this year on his way to the third round. Levine will also be in the singles draw in Newport.

Wild cards for the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships have previously been given to 2002 Newport Champion Taylor Dent and 2008 finalist Prakash Amritraj. Other players heading to Newport include two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro, along with Americans Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey and 2003 champion Robby Ginepri.

The singles draw for the 2009 tournament will be made on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on the Horseshoe Piazza in an event the media are encouraged to attend. Qualifying will begin Saturday and main draw action starts on Monday.

Tickets are on sale now for the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and can be ordered online at www.tennisfame.com or by calling 866-914-FAME (3263). The Class of 2009 is represented by Recent Player Monica Seles; Master Player Andres Gimeno; and Contributors Donald L. Dell; and Dr. Robert “Whirlwind” Johnson (posthumously).

In addition, the Hall of Fame will honor Rod Laver during Hall of Fame Weekend (July 10-12), designating him a Life Trustee of the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum while also celebrating the 40th anniversary of Laver’s remarkable 1969 Grand Slam triumph. USTA To Promote Quickstart Tennis at Essence Music Festival

USTA TO PROMOTE TENNIS THROUGH THE QUICKSTART TENNIS PLaY FORMAT

AT THE 2009 ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL

Lifetime Television Show “Army Wives” Actress Wendy Davis to Sign Autographs

at USTA Booth at the New Orleans Memorial Convention Center

Event is Part of USTA’s Efforts to Expand Diversity Initiatives

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 2, 2009 – The USTA announced today that as an outreach effort to promote tennis in diverse markets, it will feature a booth at this year’s Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, La., July 3-5, at the New Orleans Memorial Convention Center. As one of the interactive activities, USTA Southern Section representatives will conduct drills using the QuickStart Tennis play format. QuickStart Tennis is designed to help children find success from the very first swing, with age appropriate equipment and court sizes. Individuals visiting the USTA booth will also have the opportunity to participate in other activities including Wii Tennis. Prizes such as tennis rackets and bags will be given away throughout the weekend.

Lifetime Television Network actress Wendy Davis of the hit drama “Army Wives,” will also be present to sign autographs at the USTA booth. Davis is a two-time NAACP Image Award nominee -- nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Lt. Col. Joan Burton. Davis enjoys playing tennis recreationally and is joining forces with the USTA to promote tennis to African American and multicultural markets.

“I am such a fan of tennis,” said Davis. “I’m thrilled to introduce the game to my six-year-old daughter so we can now play together as a family. I believe tennis is a fantastic sport that can bring families together to live a healthy, physical lifestyle. The USTA is making a tremendous effort toward promoting tennis, and I’m really happy I can be a part of it.”

“This weekend is all about supporting the USTA’s mission to promote and develop the growth of tennis,” said Kevin Clayton, Chief Diversity Officer, USTA. “It is important to showcase tennis as a lifetime sport to the African American community, and what better way to encourage festival attendees than through the use of QuickStart Tennis -- the interactive drills will introduce adults and children to another form of physical activity.”

The USTA’s diversity strategy is to grow the game of tennis in diverse markets. As tennis continues to be the fastest growing sport in America, QuickStart Tennis is an exciting new play format for learning tennis. It is designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size. It is divided into two different levels-- ages 8 and under and ages 10 and under.

Federer on Verge of Breaking Lendl Record

FEDERER ON VERGE OF BREAKING LENDL TENNIS RECORD

NEW YORK, July 2, 2009 - Roger Federer is two match wins away from breaking Pete Sampras’s men’s record of 14 major singles titles, but is only one win away from another important tennis milestone.

As documented by tennis historian and journalist Bud Collins in his book THE BUD COLLINS HISTORY OF TENNIS, Federer, with a win over Tommy Haas in Friday’s Wimbledon semifinals, will reach his 20th major singles final, breaking Ivan Lendl’s men’s record of 19.

Federer has reached six Wimbledon finals (Champion 2003-2007, Finalist 2008), five U.S. Open finals (Champion 2004-2008), four French Open finals (Champion 2009, Finalist 2006-2008) and four Australian Open finals (Champion 2004, 2006-2007, Finalist 2009). During Lendl’s storied career, he reached the final of the U.S. Open for an incredible eight straight years (Champion 1985-1987, Finalist 1982-1984, 1988-1989), and also reached five French finals (Champion 1984, 1986-1987, Finalist 1981, 1985), four Australian Open finals (Champion 1989, 1990, Finalist 1983, 1991) and two Wimbledon finals (Finalist 1986-1987).

“Where will it all end?” said Collins of Federer’s assault on the tennis record book. “Roger Federer will, it seems, be reaching his 20th major final, snapping Ivan Lendl's record of 19. One more major title -- he'll find it somewhere -- will send him ahead of Pete Sampras's 14. He had a slump -- all great athletes do -- but appears beyond it. However, watch out for the advancing Andy's - Murray and Roddick.”

THE BUD COLLINS HISTORY OF TENNIS ($35.95, 784 pages, New Chapter Press,
www.tennistomes.com) is the most authoritative compilation of the records and histories of tennis written and compiled by Collins, the Hall of Fame tennis journalist, broadcaster and personality. Collins’ encyclopedia of tennis history is the ultimate compilation of historical tennis information, including year-by-year recaps of every tennis season, biographical sketches of every major tennis personality, as well as stats, records, and championship rolls for all the major events. The author’s personal relationships with major tennis stars offer insights into the world of professional tennis found nowhere else.

Among those endorsing the book include the two women who hold the Wimbledon record for most total titles – Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King – who both won 20 Wimbledon titles in their careers. Said Navratilova, "If you know nothing about tennis, this book is for you. And if you know everything about tennis—Hah!—Bud knows more, so this book is for you too!" Said King, “We can’t move forward if we don’t understand and appreciate our past. This book not only provides us with accurate reporting of the rich tennis history, it keeps us current on the progress of the sport today." Also endorsing the book is author, commentator and Sports Illustrated contributor Frank Deford, who stated, “No tennis encyclopedia could be written by anyone but Bud Collins because Bud Collins is the walking tennis encyclopedia—the game’s barefoot professor. The only thing missing about the sport from his new edition is a section about Bud himself. But everything else is there—and it’s easy to
open and use for the whole family.” Said Dick Enberg of CBS Sports and ESPN, “Did you ever see an encyclopedia walking? That’s Bud Collins (who sometimes runs, too). Plunge into his book and swim joyfully through the history of tennis. It’s all here.”

New Chapter Press is also the publisher of The Roger Federer Story, Quest for Perfection (
www.rogerfedererbook.com) by Rene Stauffer and Boycott: Stolen Dreams of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games by Tom Caraccioli and Jerry Caraccioli among others. Founded in 1987, New Chapter Press (www.NewChapterMedia.com) is an independent publisher of books and part of the Independent Publishers Group.

Venus Williams Destroys Dinara Safina 6-1, 6- 0 to Advance to Wimbledon Final

Total domination by Venus Williams as she has just beaten Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the Wimbledon ladies final where she will face her sister Serena. This match was in total contrast to the gritty, gut-wrenching thriller produced by her sister Serena's win over Dementieva. Key stat of the match - Venus made one one unforced error in the entire match. Total destruction.
